Jesus and COVID

If Jesus were living here today, how would He be living under COVID-19? Would His focus be on protecting His health or blessing others?

I can imagine that Jesus would be feeling compassion and love for those who had suffered and comforting the families who experienced loss. We see Jesus' compassion time again in the Bible. In Luke 7, Jesus encounters a funeral procession for a young man – the only son of a widow. The Bible says that when Jesus saw the mother, He had compassion on her and brought her son back to life. When Jesus learned that His good friend Lazarus had died, He went to comfort his sisters and mourned with them, ultimately raising their brother back to life. Whenever Jesus saw the sick and ailing, He consistently felt compassion and healed them. In Matthew 8, a leper asked Jesus if he was willing to heal him and Jesus said, “I am willing.” Jesus was always willing to minister to those in need.

If Jesus were on Earth today, how would He respond to this pandemic? With compassion, of course! With a willingness to make a difference. And since Jesus is alive in each of us, as His followers, we too ought to demonstrate His attitude of compassion and willingness to make a difference.

The reality is, our church community is impacted by COVID-19 in that we are still isolating from one another. We miss the connection that comes when we socialize and worship together. As the pandemic condition necessitates us continuing to distance from one another, I want to encourage you to please be Jesus and show compassion by reaching out to your church members and friends. Call them, text them, and see how they are doing. It’s amazing what one little phone call or text can do to lift their spirits. Let’s be Jesus and reach out to show compassion to one another.

So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who are of the household of the faith. Galatians 6:10
