A Holy Arrival

There is no more exciting event in a married couple's life than the birth of a child. Lena and I vividly remember each and every birth of our four daughters. But there is something extra special with the first baby. As we anticipated the arrival of our very own infant (with no instructional workbook), we almost panicked. One thing was for certain, we wanted to be prepared!

So we eagerly attended a birth class, sat through a parenting class, read multiple books, purchased the baby crib, car seat, swing, toys, blankets, clothes, painted the room, and stocked the closet full of diapers. We wanted to be as ready as possible for this newborn child. And when our firstborn finally arrived, we were overjoyed!

God was also excited about the birth of His first and only Son. Angel choruses announced His arrival. Shepherds and wise men heralded His birth. The prophets of old had written about the date of the birth, place of the birth and characteristics of this highly anticipated God-child. God had prepared for His arrival from the creation of the world, and it was the perfect time.

This was no ordinary birth. Jesus was supernaturally conceived by the Holy Spirit in Mary's womb. This was no ordinary child. Jesus was the divine Son of God dwelling in human flesh. This was no ordinary life. For Jesus was born to die - His mission clearly defined by Heaven - to save His people from their sins.

Therefore, this baby born in Bethlehem 2000 years ago was not just born to Mary and Joseph. This child was given to you and me as well. The Christmas season is a time to celebrate and rejoice in our hope found in Jesus. It's a time to sing and praise God for His rescue. We are not left alone to simply endure a life of pain, sickness, sadness, and death. Rather, unto us, a Child is born that will save us from the bondage and consequence of sin.

We can rejoice this Christmas because the Gift given in Bethlehem keeps on giving. And Jesus longs to give you Himself, both now and forever. 

She will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins. Matthew 1:21
