Helping Beirut!

A few weeks ago, I was moved when my 20 year old nephew, Gil Fayard, said he was headed to Beirut, Lebanon, as a result of the massive explosion that struck the capital city on August 4. The huge blast killed over 200 people, wounded more than 5,000 people and left more than 300,000 people homeless.

Gil said he wanted to make a difference for those who were suffering so he jumped on a plane with a few other friends and headed to the Middle East. Gil said he didn’t know where he would stay, or eat, or transportation or even where he would help, but he simply wanted to do something. Gil said the minute he made the decision to go, God started opening doors with all the logistics. Upon arrival into Beirut, his accommodations were set, with him staying in an empty home owned by an Adventist living in America. A neighbor also took them in and provided meals, even a Wi-Fi connection. They learned that Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) already had teams at ground zero, so they joined the effort, cleaning up.

As an Emergency Medical Technician, Gil was also able to treat many wounded in the neighborhoods surrounding the blast site. He said the people were grateful for the bandages, ointments, and care provided. Those who survived the blast said the noise of the explosion was deafening and everyone thought that the country was under attack.

Yesterday, Gil returned safely back to America. But the Lebanese people continue to suffer. You and I may not be able to travel to Beirut and lend a hand, but we can give a monetary donation to help fund the relief effort.
