How do Christians remember what Jesus did for them on the Cross? One way is through the periodic practice of Communion. This Sabbath we take a fresh look at the most symbolic meal ever consumed. We will take our place at the table in the Upper Room, and observe some of what Jesus was teaching his disciples before His ultimate sacrifice for sin.

The Bible tells us that when we approach such an important service as Communion, we are to prepare our hearts. The Apostle Paul writes: “That is why you should examine yourself before eating the bread and drinking the cup.” We examine ourselves on our knees as we recognize our faulty character, impure motives, prideful spirit, and selfish tendencies. As we examine ourselves in repentance, we also look to Jesus, who says, come as you are, and be forgiven. Romans 5:18 says, “God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”

This Sabbath, we come to celebrate what Jesus has done and is doing in our lives—not just His forgiveness and grace but His power to transform us into His true disciples. And that is something worth celebrating so that we never forget the magnificence of the Cross!

"He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed."
