Life Under Lockdown

In 1918, the Spanish flu became the most severe pandemic in recent history. In the course of a few months it infected 500 million globally, approximately one third of the world’s population at the time. It’s estimated that more than 50 million people died from the pandemic, more than 675,000 in the United States alone. Historical documents from that pandemic record how life in much of the world came to a standstill. Seventh-day Adventist Church records indicate that for some time congregations couldn’t worship together. Church doors were closed for months, and people were required to stay home. Without modern means of communication, people were forced into total isolation.
Fast forward 102 years! Everyone is concerned about the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly 50,000 have died in our country alone. It has impacted our daily lives in so many ways. Again, the doors of churches across North America and around the world are closed. The freedoms and routines we once took for granted have been eclipsed by the new normal – to shelter in place. Who would have anticipated just a few weeks ago that our world would be so incredibly transformed virtually overnight?
This Sabbath we begin a brand-new sermon series entitled: Life Under Lockdown. How do we handle the new normal? How are we to deal with social distancing without becoming distant from each other? How are we to draw closer to Jesus when we can’t even worship together? As Christians, how are we to operate in a pandemic world both at home and in our community?
