Last weekend, we had the joy of visiting the campus of Southern Adventist University in Tennessee for our daughter Colette’s graduation with a degree in business. It was a tremendous blessing to watch her walk across the stage and receive her diploma, reflecting on the journey that began years ago through Adventist education and seeing how God has faithfully guided her every step along the way.
While in Tennessee, we also had the opportunity to reconnect with dear friends from the past—Steve and Penny Wilham. Now in his early 80s, Mr. Wilham was the director of the Pathfinder Club when I was in the 7th and 8th grade in Berrien Springs, Michigan. Those Pathfinder years left a lasting impression on my life. I remember learning valuable skills, building friendships, and growing in my faith through the club’s activities and spiritual influence. I was also part of our marching team, where Mr. Wilham trained us in the art of precision drill marching. By God’s blessing and his dedicated leadership, we won the state championship two years in a row. During our visit, I had the chance to thank Mr. Wilham personally and share how much his investment in young people impacted me.
Experiences like these are a reminder of the lasting influence Pathfinders can have on the lives of our youth. Pathfinders is often described as the Adventist alternative to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, but it is much more than a club for learning outdoor or practical skills. It is a place where young people build character, form meaningful friendships, discover leadership, and most importantly, deepen their relationship with Jesus.
This Sabbath, The Hill Pathfinder Club will be leading our worship service. Under the leadership of Willard Ranney, our club director, a special program has been prepared that will include Pathfinder-led testimonies, music, and the baptism of longtime Pathfinder Walter Marpaung. Following the service, we will also enjoy the blessing of fellowship together during a potluck meal.
As we gather this Sabbath, may we come not only to worship our Lord, but also to encourage and support the spiritual growth and discipleship of our young people through Pathfinders. We warmly invite you to join us for this special day of worship, testimony, fellowship, and celebration. We hope to see you there!
