Troubling World

When my father was in high school, he remembers vividly the school principal abruptly announcing that President Kennedy had been shot. When President Reagan was shot, I learned of it while walking between classes at Fresno Adventist Academy. When something tragic happens, we never forget exactly what we were doing when we learned about it.
The same could be said for each one of us when a few days ago we learned that former President Trump had been shot. When unthinkable tragedy strikes, it’s a reminder that we live in a war zone with a foe who is likened to a stalking roaring lion.
But despite life’s relentless uncertainties, the Bible seeks to reassure us with a faith-based command that goes something like this: “Do not be afraid.” The most repeated command in the Bible is stated 365 times, once for each day of the year.
During times like these, it's especially reassuring to remember, the Lord does not want us to be afraid. Jesus put it this way, “Do not worry.” Don’t worry about today, don’t worry about tomorrow. Don’t worry about elections, don’t worry about the news, don’t worry about your future. When we worry, we are suggesting that someone other than God is handling the unknown.
True followers of Jesus choose faith over fear. David is our example, trusting in the Lord, even though the jealous King Saul pursued him with thousands of soldiers. Job lost his health, wealth and children, but he never lost his faith in God.
May we continue to deepen our trust in Jesus and take on His courage to face the many uncertainties of this life. May Joshua’s mantra be ours, to always be strong and courageous in the Lord!
"In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I (Jesus) have overcome the world.”
John 16:33
